01
Overview

Cityograph ("we", "us", "our") operates the website at cityograph.com and the Cityograph map poster tool. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use our services, how we use it, and your rights in relation to it.

Cityograph is designed to run primarily in your browser. Map rendering, poster customisation, and export are all performed client-side. This architecture means we have no technical need — and no desire — to collect or process your personal data.

✅Plain English: You can use Cityograph to search for cities, build posters, and export files without us ever knowing who you are or what you created. The tool works without an account and doesn't log your activity.
02
Data We Collect

We collect the bare minimum needed to keep the service running reliably. Specifically:

  • Server access logs — standard web server logs that record your IP address, the page requested, timestamp, and browser type. These are retained for up to 30 days for security and diagnostic purposes, then automatically deleted.
  • Aggregate usage statistics — anonymised counts of page views and feature usage (e.g. how many exports were made in a given day). These contain no personally identifiable information and are used solely to understand how the tool is used.
  • Voluntary contact information — if you email us directly, we receive your email address and any information you choose to include. We use this only to respond to your message.
â„šī¸Access logs and you: IP addresses in access logs are not linked to any user profile or search history. We cannot and do not reconstruct what you searched or built from these logs.
03
What We Don't Collect

We want to be explicit about what we do not collect, because we think you deserve to know:

  • City names or locations you search for
  • Poster designs, themes, or settings you configure
  • Exported files — these are generated and saved entirely in your browser
  • Your name, email address, or any account details (no account is required)
  • Device fingerprints or persistent identifiers
  • Behavioural tracking or click paths
  • Cross-site tracking data of any kind
✅Your posters are yours. Exported PNG, PDF, and SVG files are created entirely within your browser and downloaded directly to your device. They never touch our servers.
04
Third-Party Services

Cityograph depends on three open-source mapping services to function. When you use the tool, your browser communicates directly with these services. Each has its own privacy policy, which we link to below.

ServicePurposeData sentPrivacy policy
OpenStreetMapMap tilesYour IP address and the tile coordinates requestedosmfoundation.org
NominatimGeocodingThe city name or search string you type, and your IP addressnominatim.org
MapLibre GL JSRenderingLoaded as a JavaScript library — no data is sent to MapLibre serversmaplibre.org
âš ī¸Nominatim and city search: When you type a city name, that query is sent to the Nominatim geocoding API. We do not log or store these queries, but Nominatim's own servers process them. Nominatim is operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation and subject to fair use limits. See their privacy policy for details.

We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any advertising or behavioural tracking scripts. No third-party analytics platform receives data about your usage of Cityograph.

05
Cookies & Local Storage

Cityograph uses browser localStorage to persist your last-used settings between sessions — things like your chosen theme, layout preference, and map position. This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us.

  • We set no tracking cookies of any kind.
  • We set no third-party cookies.
  • localStorage entries used by Cityograph are prefixed cityograph_ and can be cleared at any time from your browser settings.
✅No cookie banner needed. Because we don't use tracking or advertising cookies, we have no need to show you a cookie consent banner. The only storage we use is for your own convenience, entirely on your device.
06
Data Retention

The following retention periods apply to the limited data we do hold:

  • Server access logs — automatically purged after 30 days.
  • Aggregate anonymised statistics — kept indefinitely as they contain no personal data.
  • Emails you send us — kept for as long as the conversation is relevant, and deleted on request.

There is no user account system and therefore no user profile, purchase history, or saved poster data that we could retain even if we wanted to.

07
Your Rights

Under applicable data protection law (including the GDPR), you have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of any personal data we hold about you.
  • Erasure — ask us to delete any personal data we hold (primarily any emails you've sent us).
  • Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate personal data.
  • Object — object to any processing of your personal data.
  • Portability — request your data in a portable format.

Because we collect so little data, most of these rights will have limited practical scope. To exercise any right, email us at privacy@cityograph.com and we'll respond within 30 days.

â„šī¸No account, no data. The vast majority of Cityograph users have no personal data held by us at all. If you've never emailed us, we have nothing to erase beyond server logs that are auto-deleted after 30 days.
08
Children's Privacy

Cityograph is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at privacy@cityograph.com and we will delete it promptly.

09
Policy Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we'll post a notice on the Cityograph homepage.
